Almodóvar’s new movie (what a great phrase - it’s so exciting when, about every two years, a new film from the great Spanish film maker arrives at the movies) Bad Education looks and sounds beautiful, and the usual suspects of junkies, trannies and bewitching shadow dwellers are out in abundance. Mexican hottie Gael Garcia Bernal follows Antonio Banderas’ lead of grabbing an Almodóvar role on the eve of his Hollywood breakthrough, and he’s effective in a dual role as an ambitious actor and a vengeful drag queen. But Bad Education is missing the fairy dust that made All About My Mother such a magical masterpiece. It’s light years ahead of everything else in the cinemas at the moment, but just a half-step behind Almodóvar’s best work.
