JUDGING PANEL

Our seven judges this year were drawn from the world of film, television, theatre and internet production. Among them are Academy Award nominees, award-winning writers and gay film festval managers, and they hail, variosuly, from the UK, Australia and the USA. The 2008 judges were:

2008 Outrate Online Short Film Festival FIRST PRIZE WINNER:
and Everything Nice, directed by Craig Boreham and Peta Jane Lenehan
Synopsis: The curiosity of a schoolgirl leads her to skip a day at school to observe a classmate as she wanders through the city.

Judges Comments: The silent delicacy of this film outshone the competition, to be sure. I find myself haunted by it, which is a good thing ... Slick and stylish ... A simple story well told, and uses lack of dialogue well ... conveyed a narrative without pretentiousness.

2008 Outrate Online Short Film Festival SECOND PRIZE WINNER:
Green Room, directed by Matt Palazzolo
Synopsis: An abstract video diary that is a collection of moments and voices from the director's teenage years culminating into a intimate portrait of gay youth.

Judges Comments: Original, ambitious ... Palazzolo's clearly a talented artist with a lot to say. He pulled this off with skill and unique vision. He's profound for such a young man. This is a very enveloping piece ... examines interesting ideas.

2008 Outrate Online Short Film Festival THIRD PRIZE WINNER:
Blue, directed by Remy Schepers
Synopsis: A short fictional film about a boy struggling with his feelings. Created for a fiction assignment in Audiovisual Media. Assignment guidelines included that the film had to relate to the theme ''emotion'', had to contain no dialogue and be approximately 10 minutes of length.

Judges Comments: Touching, disturbing and beautiful. This flick made me reflect on how lucky I am to have supportive family and friends, and it made my heart ache for those who do not. The lead actor especially deserves a congratulations for his expressive silence ... an ambitious film.

2008 Outrate Online Short Film Festival FOURTH PRIZE WINNER:
The Strippersons, directed by David LeBarron

Synopsis: Eugene is the youngest member of a family of strippers, living in North Hollywood, who must get over his "Stripping Stage Fright" caused by his huge endowment in this touching situation comedy.

Synopsis: Fresh, funny and strangely touching. Like a gay twist on 'Boogie Nights' ... Capable, engaging and definitely entertaining ... A winner! Silly and embarrassing but at least it has narrative, technique and good actors.
